Both games are drawn late at night in the US, so in South Africa the numbers arrive early the next morning. The US moves its clocks in March and November; South Africa does not, so the SAST time shifts by an hour.

US lotteries are sold only inside the United States, but winners do not need to be US residents. South Africans play through ticket courier services. Before you do, read how it works, the costs and the legal and tax points. A non-resident winner normally has 30% US federal tax withheld; residents of countries with a tax treaty, which includes South Africa, may be able to reclaim it.[5]

What time are the US lottery results out in South Africa?
Mega Millions is drawn at 11:00 pm Eastern Time on Tuesday and Friday, which is 06:00 SAST on Wednesday and Saturday morning (05:00 from mid-March to early November). Powerball is drawn at 10:59 pm ET on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday: 05:59 or 04:59 SAST the next morning. See draw times.
Why does the draw date not match the South African date?
Results are labelled with the US draw date. Because of the time difference, a Tuesday-night Mega Millions draw is announced on Wednesday morning in South Africa.
Can South Africans play US lotteries?
Neither lottery requires winners to be US citizens or residents, but tickets must be bought inside the US. From abroad people use a ticket courier service that buys an official ticket in their name. Check South African gambling rules before you play. See playing from South Africa.
